Blackout continuity · Generator, workshop and machines · continuity-11Equip the workshop with hand tools first
Hand tools work with no fuel, no charge and no network. Build the core set before power tools, then add powered tools as time savers.
How
- Build a core kit: claw hammer, saws (panel, hack and bow saw), screwdrivers, spanners and adjustable wrench, pipe wrench, pliers, chisels, hand drill and brace, files, clamps, tape measure, spirit level and square.
- Add repair supplies: assorted screws, bolts, nails, hose clamps, wire, duct and PTFE tape, epoxy, sealant, cable ties, sandpaper and oil.
- Add sharpening gear (files and stones) so blades, axes and chains stay useful.
- Add a sewing and mending kit for clothing, canvas, bags and tarps.
- Store tools dry, oiled and on a labelled board so missing items are obvious.
- CISA's resilience guidance treats tools and parts that are hard to replace quickly as items to keep on hand; apply the same thinking to the workshop.
