Plan transport without fuel deliveries

When fuel stops, vehicles become precious and bicycles become daily transport. Plan who travels how, and keep the means maintained.

How

  1. Keep at least one bicycle per adult and a workshop kit for it: tubes, patches, tyre levers, pump, chain tool, brake pads, cables and chain lube.
  2. Add a cargo trailer for loads. Cycling UK's tests found typical maximum loads of about 40 to 50 kg (the trailers tested ranged from 28 to 60 kg). Check the rating of the one you buy.
  3. Use an axle-mounted hitch with a safety strap for heavy loads; Cycling UK notes a heavy trailer on a seatpost hitch can lift the rear wheel when braking.
  4. Make sure the bike's brakes and gears can handle the loaded weight on your hills.
  5. Keep a hand cart or wheelbarrow for moving firewood, water and feed around the estate.
  6. For vehicles, keep fuel treated, the battery charged from solar, and spares for your model: filters, belts, fuses, bulbs, wiper blades and a tyre repair kit. Save vehicle fuel for medical and emergency trips.
