Stock screen-free entertainment

Games, books, instruments and crafts need no power and keep working when the battery is low. They are also better for young children.

How

  1. Ready.gov lists books, games, puzzles and other activities for children as part of a household emergency kit.
  2. Stock board and card games for every age group, jigsaws, a chess or draughts set, and outdoor games such as balls, skipping ropes and a frisbee.
  3. Add musical instruments people can learn: guitar, ukulele, keyboard on batteries, recorder, percussion. Print the sheet music and tutors; Musopen offers free sheet music.
  4. Keep a printed library of novels, picture books, reference books and textbooks, so reading does not depend on charging.
  5. Add craft supplies: paper, pencils, paints, wool, simple woodwork kits.
  6. Plan garden and animal jobs as shared activities with children (link food and animals modules).
