Set up age-appropriate access offline

Without online services, parental controls must live on your own server and devices. Set them up before you need them.

How

  1. Create a separate Jellyfin user for each person. Jellyfin lets you set a maximum allowed parental rating, block unrated items, block or allow tags, and set an access schedule that stops playback outside allowed hours.
  2. Turn off access to all libraries for children's accounts and grant only the libraries meant for them.
  3. Keep adult content on separate drives or libraries, and lock the shelf copy away.
  4. Use the age-rating column of the catalogue to tag titles that have no rating.
  5. Review the settings every few months as children grow.
