Buy DRM-free downloads wherever they are offered

DRM-free files play on any device with no online check, so they keep working for as long as the drive survives.

How

  1. Music: iTunes Plus songs are DRM-free 256 kbit/s AAC with no burn limits. Bandcamp lets you download purchases as MP3, FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, WAV or AIFF.
  2. Audiobooks: Libro.fm sells DRM-free audiobooks as MP3 tracks or a single M4B file.
  3. Before you buy from any store, read its help page and check two things: is the file DRM-free, and can you download the actual file to a computer?
  4. Prefer lossless (FLAC or ALAC) for the master copy of favourite albums if storage allows, and keep a smaller copy for phones.
  5. Download every purchase to the media computer straight away and add it to the catalogue (entertainment-13). Do not rely on the store still existing later.
