Rooms and storage · Storage, furniture and lighting · rooms-19Choose durable, repairable, multipurpose furniture
Off grid, there may be no easy replacement when something breaks. Favour furniture you can repair, that does more than one job and that does not need power.
How
- Choose solid frames with screwed or bolted joints and standard fixings you can replace, rather than glued, disposable items.
- Pick multipurpose pieces: a bench with storage, a dining table that serves as a schoolroom and a processing worktop, a sofa bed for guests.
- Prefer manual over powered furniture (manual recliners, manual adjustable desks) unless someone needs powered support for health or mobility.
- Choose washable, removable covers and hard-wearing finishes you can re-oil or repaint.
- Choose chairs with armrests for older people, as AARP suggests, and keep floors clear and rugs secured to avoid trips.
- Check that any tall or heavy piece can be anchored to the wall before you buy it (rooms-21).
