Install smoke alarms in the right places

Smoke alarms give the early warning that lets a family get out. In a remote home they are even more important because help is far away.

How

  1. Follow the US Fire Administration placement advice as a baseline: inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level, including the basement. Check your local code too.
  2. Mount alarms on the ceiling or high on a wall, following the maker's instructions.
  3. Choose interconnected alarms so all sound when one does. Wireless interconnected alarms avoid new cabling.
  4. Add alarms to the battery room, workshop and any outbuilding where people sleep.
  5. Avoid placing alarms right next to the kitchen or bathroom, where cooking smoke and steam cause false alarms.
  6. Test every alarm monthly and replace each alarm 10 years after its manufacture date, as USFA advises.

Safety: Never remove the battery to silence a nuisance alarm. Use the hush button and ventilate.
