Consider incinerating toilets

Incinerating toilets burn waste to a small amount of ash using electricity or gas. They suit cold sites, permafrost or places with no soil for treatment, but need a reliable energy supply.

How

  1. Get the manufacturer's technical data for energy use per cycle, venting, clearances and daily capacity, then check it against your power or gas budget.
  2. Plan a dedicated flue or vent exactly as the manufacturer and your building code require.
  3. Ask your authority whether the model is approved and whether a certification such as NSF/ANSI 41 is required where you live.
  4. Plan for greywater separately, as incinerating toilets only take toilet waste.
  5. Budget for servicing and spare parts, as these are mechanical and heating appliances.

Safety: Hot surfaces, flue gases and fire risk. Follow the manufacturer's clearances and fit a carbon monoxide alarm if gas-fired (see the safety module).

Do these first
