Schedule pumping and inspections

Septic tanks fill with sludge and scum and must be pumped before solids reach the drainfield. Inspections catch problems early.

How

  1. US EPA guidance: have a typical household system inspected at least every 3 years and pumped every 3 to 5 years. Systems with pumps, floats or mechanical parts are usually inspected yearly.
  2. Pump when the bottom of the scum is within 6 inches of the outlet, the top of the sludge is within 12 inches of the outlet, or sludge and scum fill more than 25% of the liquid depth (US EPA).
  3. Use the pump-out calculator for a first estimate, then let measured sludge levels set the real schedule.
  4. Have the tank pumped through the central manhole, not the baffle ports, and ask the contractor to check the baffles.
  5. In England, the Environment Agency's permit guidance and its surface water rules both say the tank or plant must be emptied at least once a year (or as the manufacturer says), by a registered waste carrier. The general binding rules themselves only require an authorised person to remove the sludge, so check the guidance that applies to your discharge.
  6. Composting toilets: empty only mature material and keep a log of when each chamber was closed.

Safety: Never enter a septic tank or lean into it. Toxic gases can kill within minutes. No smoking or flames near openings.
