Fit approved cabinets and store ammunition separately where required

Use storage that meets your local standard, fixed to the structure, with ammunition stored the way the law requires.

How

  1. Buy a cabinet or safe meeting the standard your authority names. In the UK, the Home Office advises new cabinets conform to BS 7558.
  2. Fix it to masonry or concrete as in the anchoring step, out of view of visitors, inside the lived-in part of the house where possible (UK guidance).
  3. Store ammunition separately where required. NSW police require a separate locked container or locked compartment (Australia); UK guidance treats a separate locked compartment as best practice for section 1 ammunition.
  4. Keep ammunition away from fire risks and escape routes (UK guidance).
  5. If the house has an alarm, include the storage area. The Home Office suggests alarms for higher risk situations.
  6. Control humidity in the cabinet as in the humidity step.
