Plumbing and water treatment

Leaks waste stored water and burst pipes can empty a tank in hours. Treating water to drinking quality by hand is a life-safety skill when filters or UV fail.

How

  1. Learn to shut off water at every valve, drain pipes, replace washers and toilet flappers, and seal threads. Do the EPA dye test: a few drops of food colouring in the toilet tank; colour in the bowl after about 10 minutes means a leak.
  2. Learn to read your water meter or tank gauge with all taps off; a change over two hours suggests a leak (EPA). Leaks can be large: EPA estimates the average US household leaks nearly 10,000 gallons a year.
  3. Practise emergency treatment: boil clear water at a rolling boil for 1 minute, or 3 minutes above 6,500 ft (about 2,000 m) (CDC).
  4. Practise chlorine disinfection: about 8 drops of 5 to 9 percent unscented bleach per US gallon (3.8 L). Double it for cloudy or very cold water. Then wait at least 30 minutes before drinking (CDC), the same rule used across the platform.
  5. For tanks, learn to check the chlorine left after 30 minutes with a test kit, using the targets in water-16. Know that bleach is weaker than boiling against Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
  6. Know the limit: water contaminated with fuel or chemicals cannot be made safe by boiling or bleach (CDC). Link the treatment backup in water-25 and filter upkeep in water-23.
  7. For deeper skills, look for a community college plumbing fundamentals course (US example: Copper Mountain College).

Safety: Do not mix bleach with other cleaners. Store bleach away from children.
