Waste law varies by country and region. Before choosing systems, find out what you may burn, what must go to a licensed facility and where the nearest drop-off points are.
How
- Ask your local council or environmental agency about open burning. Example (UK): burning household waste is not allowed if it pollutes or harms health, and councils can issue abatement notices for smoke nuisance. In the US, rules are set by states and localities.
- Find the nearest household hazardous waste collection site or collection day, battery and electronics drop-off and scrap metal yard.
- Ask whether a rural transfer station, kerbside service or private hauler covers your road, and what they accept.
- Ask whether a permit is needed for a biogas digester, a large compost operation or importing manure.
- Record distances, opening days and accepted items in your waste log.
