Write and practise a drought plan
Every source can fail in a long drought. A written plan with trigger levels stops a slow problem becoming an emergency.
How
- Set tank level triggers, for example normal, watch, restrict and emergency, each tied to actions.
- At each trigger, cut uses in order: lawn and ornamentals first, then non-essential washing, then garden crops, then animals reduced to essentials. Keep the fire reserve locked.
- Track monthly rainfall against median (Texas manual approach) and watch well levels if you can measure them.
- Keep the emergency minimum from water-1 (at least 15 L per person per day per Sphere) as the absolute floor, and plan how many days storage covers at that rate.
- In extreme heat or with sick people, raise that floor towards 20 L per person per day, as Sphere advises.
- Identify backup sources in advance: a neighbour, a licensed water carter or a second well. Check legal arrangements with the legal module.
- Follow drought guidance from your local water authority; US EPA WaterSense publishes drought water-saving tips.
