Assess springs and surface water honestly

Springs, streams and ponds look free, but they are easily contaminated and often legally controlled. Treat them as raw water that always needs treatment.

How

  1. Check flow across seasons. Measure a spring or stream in the driest month, not after rain.
  2. Watch how it responds to rain. NC State Extension notes that water levels that change quickly after rain show a spring is highly vulnerable to contamination.
  3. Look uphill. A spring is a poor choice if its recharge area has farms, industry or other pollution, according to NC State.
  4. Test before and after heavy rain for bacteria, pH, turbidity and conductivity, as NC State advises.
  5. Confirm legal rights with the legal module. Taking water from streams and springs is licensed in many countries (see the England example in water-4).
  6. Plan for full treatment (sediment filtration plus disinfection) on any surface or spring source used for drinking.

Safety: Never drink untreated spring, stream or pond water, however clear it looks.
