Build goat and sheep shelter and handling area
Goats and sheep need a dry, draught-free shelter and a simple pen for handling, hoof care and health checks.
How
- Shelter space (NMSU Extension, goats): 10 to 15 sq ft (0.9 to 1.4 m2) of bedded area per adult, plus about 25 sq ft (2.3 m2) of exercise space each. Kidding pens at least 4 x 5 ft (1.2 x 1.5 m).
- Leave one side open away from prevailing winds, with panels to close in storms. Goats cope with dry cold but get respiratory illness in wet, draughty housing.
- Provide shade in hot weather and clean water every day; goats will drink more if water is warmed in cold weather.
- Plan for predators: Kentucky Extension recommends good fencing plus a guardian animal such as a livestock guardian dog, donkey or llama.
- Build a small catch pen and gate system so one person can handle animals calmly.
- Plan clostridial vaccination and mineral feeding before the animals arrive (animals-26).
