Part 4 · Grow your food

Animals

A step by step guide to deciding whether to keep animals, then planning, building and running poultry, rabbits, goats, sheep, bees and fish systems on an off-grid estate. It covers welfare standards, local rules, housing space, fencing and grazing, water and feed sizing, biosecurity, manure reuse and records.

Why it matters

Animals turn grass, scraps and insects into eggs, meat, milk, honey and fertile manure, closing loops between food, waste and soil. They also add the largest daily workload and a legal duty of care. Their water, power, feed and manure loads must be designed into the estate from the start, not added later.

Decide whether, which and how many (Plan)

  1. Decide whether animals fit your life animals-1
  2. Check local rules, registration and permits animals-2
  3. Adopt a welfare standard for your estate animals-3
  4. Match animal numbers to your land animals-4

Design water, fencing, grazing, feed and manure systems (Design)

  1. Calculate daily water for animals animals-5
  2. Design fencing and paddocks animals-6
  3. Plan rotational grazing animals-7
  4. Plan feed storage and grow fodder animals-8
  5. Design manure handling into compost and biogas animals-9

Build housing for poultry and rabbits (Install)

  1. Size and build the chicken coop animals-10
  2. Predator-proof coop and run animals-11
  3. Set up feed, water and heat protection for laying hens animals-12
  4. Brood chicks and light the laying flock animals-28
  5. Add ducks (optional) animals-13
  6. Build rabbit housing animals-14

Build for goats, sheep, bees and fish (Install)

  1. Build goat and sheep shelter and handling area animals-15
  2. Set up a parasite control plan animals-16
  3. Vaccinate goats and sheep and feed minerals safely animals-26
  4. Set up beehives safely and legally animals-17
  5. Monitor and control varroa mites animals-25
  6. Plan aquaculture or aquaponics animals-18

Biosecurity, hygiene and contingency (Test)

  1. Write a biosecurity plan and quarantine routine animals-19
  2. Set hygiene rules to prevent zoonoses animals-20
  3. Prepare contingency plans animals-21

Daily husbandry, records and end of life (Run)

  1. Run daily checks and keep records animals-22
  2. Breed meat rabbits animals-29
  3. Make home milk safe animals-27
  4. Plan humane slaughter, culling and disposal legally animals-23
  5. Run the manure and bedding cycle animals-24
