Plan humane slaughter, culling and disposal legally

Every animal reaches the end of its productive life. Decide in advance how this will be done humanely and lawfully.

How

  1. Check your national and local law on killing animals at home, selling meat or eggs, and disposing of carcasses. Rules differ widely by country.
  2. Meat for sale usually must go through a licensed slaughterhouse or processor; check your local food authority.
  3. Humane killing needs training. The UK laying hen code says culling should be done by trained people or a competent contractor, with records.
  4. Agree with your vet who will euthanise a sick or injured animal quickly if needed.
  5. Arrange lawful carcass disposal through your local authority or a fallen stock service.
