Understand why streaming downloads will not last a blackout

Downloads inside streaming apps are rentals tied to an account and an internet check. In a long outage they stop working, so they cannot be your library.

How

  1. Spotify: you must go online at least once every 30 days to keep downloads, with a limit of 5 devices and 10,000 tracks per device.
  2. Disney+: reconnect at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active.
  3. Netflix: downloads expire after a set period, some titles can only be downloaded a limited number of times, and cancelling deletes them.
  4. Prime Video: subscription downloads typically must be started within 30 days and finished within 48 hours of starting; purchased titles can be downloaded to up to four compatible devices with no expiry, but the rules do not say whether they need an online check, so test before relying on them.
  5. Treat all of these as convenience only. Build the core library from files you own outright (entertainment-5 and entertainment-6).
