Get several written quotes

Comparing written quotes on the same scope is the main protection against overpaying and misunderstanding.

How

  1. Write a clear scope for each package (for example well drilling, septic, solar installation, framing) with drawings and specifications.
  2. Ask at least three firms to quote on the same scope; UK self-build guidance and the US Federal Trade Commission both advise getting several quotes.
  3. Ask each quote to state the work, materials, completion date and price.
  4. Do not automatically pick the cheapest. If prices differ widely, ask each firm to explain why.
  5. Check what is excluded (site access, waste removal, permits, commissioning, documentation).
  6. Note how long each quote is valid.

Do these first
