Permits and budget
This module shows you how to find out what is legally allowed on a piece of land before you buy, which permits and inspections your off-grid systems are likely to need, and how to plan the money, schedule and people for the build. It uses labelled examples from the US, UK, Australia and elsewhere, but the rules where you build are the only ones that count, so every step tells you what to ask and whom to ask.
Why it matters
A perfectly engineered off-grid estate can still be refused occupancy, fined or ordered to be removed if it breaks local land use or building rules. Permits shape what you can build, where, and in what order, so they sit at the start of the roadmap. Good budgeting and phasing decide whether the project is finished at all: most failed self-builds run out of money or time, not ideas.
