Check licences, insurance and references

A licence check confirms a contractor is allowed to do regulated work. References show whether they finish jobs well.

How

  1. Look up each contractor's licence or registration with the official body (for example a state or county licensing board in the US, or a competent person scheme register for electrical work in England).
  2. Check the licence covers the type of work and is current.
  3. Ask for proof of the contractor's own insurance and check it is current. Do not rely on the contractor's word.
  4. Ask for recent references, ideally for off-grid or rural jobs, and visit one if possible.
  5. Search for complaints with consumer protection officials and trade associations.
  6. Be wary of demands for full payment in advance, cash only, or pressure to use a particular lender.
