Do an off-grid trial run before committing

Live off-grid style for several weeks before you buy land or sign a build contract. It shows you your real energy and water use and whether everyone in the household enjoys this life.

How

  1. Pick a period of at least four weeks, ideally including your darkest or hottest season, and agree the rules with the whole household.
  2. Read your electricity meter every morning and write the daily kWh in a notebook. This becomes the starting point for the power module's load audit.
  3. Read your water meter daily, or measure buckets if you have no meter, and log litres used per day and per person.
  4. Try living within a fixed daily energy budget: no electric heating or tumble dryer, heavy appliances only in daylight, lights off when not needed.
  5. Cook from a stocked pantry for at least one week without shopping, to test your storage and cooking habits.
  6. Hold a short family meeting each week: what was hard, what was easy, what you would never give up. Write it down.
  7. Optionally rent an off-grid cabin or farm stay for a week to test real systems, remote location and isolation.
