Follow a calm troubleshooting order when a system fails

Most failures are simple: a tripped breaker, a flat battery, a clogged filter. A fixed order of checks keeps people safe and finds the cause faster.

How

  1. 1. Make it safe: if there is smoke, fire, gas smell, burning smell, water near electrics or anyone hurt, leave the area and follow the emergency plan (safety module).
  2. 2. Check the obvious: is the battery low, is the tank empty, is it simply dark or cloudy, has a breaker or fuse tripped, has the low-voltage disconnect cut in?
  3. 3. Read the monitor and any error codes, and look them up in the manual.
  4. 4. Check the logbook: when did readings start to change, and what changed around that time?
  5. 5. Reduce load: switch off non-essential loads and use the backup (generator, stored water, pantry) while you diagnose.
  6. 6. Do only safe user-level fixes: reset a breaker once, change a filter, clear a blockage. If a breaker trips again, stop.
  7. 7. Call the installer or a qualified professional for anything involving wiring, battery terminals, gas, pressure vessels or structure.
  8. 8. Record the fault, cause and fix in the logbook and restock any spare you used.

Safety: Never repeatedly reset a breaker that keeps tripping, and never bypass a safety device.
