Design a small medical room or cupboard
On a remote estate the medical room is where you treat minor injuries, store medicines and kits, keep the health file and talk to a clinician remotely. It does not need to be big, but it must be clean, lit, dry and secure.
How
- Choose a cool, dry, interior space away from the kitchen stove and bathroom humidity, close to an exit and vehicle access.
- Washable, smooth surfaces on the floor, walls and worktop so they can be cleaned and disinfected.
- Good task lighting on the battery-backed circuit, plus a head torch, so you can see a wound at night during an outage.
- Hand washing with clean running water and soap, or a jug-and-basin setup fed with treated water (water-16), and a bin with a lid.
- Lockable cabinets for medicines, kept up and out of sight of children, with child-resistant caps closed every time.
- A wall-mounted inventory sheet and the master health file, a seat or couch for the patient, and a spot with power and signal for remote consultation (medical-24).
- A puncture-resistant sharps container if anyone uses needles.
