Look after teeth and know dental first aid
Dental pain and infection are hard to manage far from a dentist. Prevention before and during off-grid life matters most.
How
- Fix known dental problems before moving (medical-1).
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth, limit added sugar and avoid tobacco. CDC advises a dental visit at least once a year.
- Knocked-out adult tooth: keep it moist in milk or a tooth preservation product with the ADA Seal and get to a dentist right away.
- Broken tooth: rinse with warm water, cold compress on the face, see a dentist as soon as possible.
- Toothache: rinse with warm water and gently floss. Do not put aspirin on the gum, as it can burn. Contact a dentist if pain continues.
- Print or buy a dental reference such as Hesperian's Where There Is No Dentist, and keep it with the medical books.
