Prevent mosquito and tick bites
Mosquitoes and ticks spread serious diseases in many climates. Prevention is cheap and works without power.
How
- Use a registered insect repellent, following the label. CDC lists DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, PMD and 2-undecanone.
- Treat clothing, boots and tents with 0.5% permethrin, or buy pretreated items. Never put permethrin on skin.
- After time outdoors, check your whole body for ticks, including armpits, knees, waist, hair and ears. Remove any attached tick as soon as possible.
- Shower within 2 hours of coming indoors; CDC says this lowers the risk of Lyme disease.
- Once a week, empty, scrub, cover or throw away anything that holds water. Seal water tanks tightly, or cover them with mesh finer than a mosquito (water module).
- Fit and repair window and door screens.
Safety: Follow each repellent's label, especially for children.
