Lay out the kitchen for off-grid cooking

An off-grid kitchen often runs two or three cooking methods: an electric hob used when the sun shines, a fuel or wood stove as backup and sometimes a solar cooker outside. The layout must fit them safely.

How

  1. Choose cooking energy sources in thermal-24 first, then plan space and clearances for each one using the maker's installation instructions.
  2. Keep combustible items such as towels, oven mitts, paper and packaging away from the hob, as the US Fire Administration advises, and keep a pan lid and oven mitt next to it to smother a small pan fire.
  3. Plan a child-free zone of at least 1 metre (3 feet) around the stove, as USFA recommends.
  4. Put the refrigerator away from the stove and oven so it does not have to work harder; leave the air gap the maker asks for.
  5. Fit task lighting over the hob, sink and worktop on the battery-backed circuit.
  6. Install a smoke alarm nearby but not right beside the cooker, and CO alarms wherever fuel is burned (safety-9, safety-10).

Safety: Never leave frying unattended. Burning fuel indoors needs ventilation and a CO alarm.
