Basic electrics awareness and safe isolation

Everyone should know how the estate's power system works, how to switch it off safely in an emergency and how to read the monitor. Nobody should work on live circuits.

How

  1. Have the installer or a licensed electrician walk the household through the system: where each isolator is, what it isolates and in what order to shut down (power-18, power-23). Label every isolation point.
  2. Learn the principle of safe isolation that electricians use: identify the right isolator, switch off, lock off, post a warning, and prove dead with a tested voltage indicator. Non-contact testers alone are not enough (IET, UK).
  3. Understand that UK guidance says live work, including testing and fault finding, is allowed only in limited circumstances, and dead working is the norm (HSE GS38).
  4. Know your legal limits. England example: work on solar PV, generators, garden power and bathrooms is notifiable and needs a registered electrician or building control; only minor like-for-like jobs may be DIY, and must be tested. Rules differ by country; check your local code.
  5. Learn the tasks that are safe and useful for owners: reading the battery monitor (living-5), resetting a tripped breaker after finding the cause, cleaning panels, and recognising warning signs such as heat, smell or discoloration.
  6. Keep the troubleshooting order from living-20 printed beside the power room door.

Safety: Never work live. Treat every conductor as live until a trained person has proved it dead.
