Plan household roles, schooling and remote work

Off-grid life adds daily chores that someone must own. Agree who does what, how children will be educated and how adults will earn a living if they work remotely.

How

  1. List the recurring jobs from the maintenance calendar (living-16): battery checks, tank readings, compost turning, animal care, preserving, cooking.
  2. Assign an owner and a backup for every job so nothing stops when one person is ill or away.
  3. Teach every adult and older child the basics: reading the battery monitor, shutting off water, isolating power in an emergency (see the safety module).
  4. For children, check your country's rules on schooling and home education, and the distance and transport to the nearest school. Rules differ widely by country.
  5. If anyone works remotely, list the bandwidth, hours and video-call needs, and take these to the safety module's communications section before choosing satellite, cellular or other internet.
  6. Budget the energy use of home office equipment and internet hardware into the daily energy budget (living-5).
  7. Agree a weekly family meeting slot to review chores, energy, water and wellbeing.
