Lay out the workshop and tool storage

In a long blackout the workshop is where things get repaired. It needs daylight, a strong bench, organised tool storage and safe charging for battery tools.

How

  1. Place the workshop near vehicle access and away from bedrooms, with a hard floor and good daylight (design-10).
  2. Fit a sturdy workbench and wall storage for hand tools first, following the tool list in continuity-11.
  3. Set up a separate charging station for power tool batteries on a non-combustible surface, as continuity-12 describes.
  4. Use heavy-duty steel shelving rated for the load, with heavy items low (see rooms-18) and shelving fixed to the wall if it is tall.
  5. Keep a spares register and labelled bins for each system (continuity-16).
  6. Fit a smoke alarm and keep an extinguisher by the door (safety-9, safety-12). Store fuel outside the workshop, as continuity-6 sets out.

Safety: Keep fuel out of the workshop and charge batteries on a non-combustible surface.
